NDC disowns ‘fake’ candidate lists in South East

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has dismissed a list of alleged candidates for upcoming elections in Imo, Abia, and Anambra states currently circulating on social media, insisting the document is fake and not authorised by the party.

According to The Punch, in a statement released on Friday by its National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, the party said the lists did not originate from its national headquarters and should be ignored by both members and the public.

The party added that it had already forwarded the genuine list of its candidates for the affected states to the Independent National Electoral Commission through the proper channels as required by the Electoral Act.

“The general public, especially members of the NDC in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states, are hereby urged to disregard the lists of candidates widely circulating on social media as the authentic lists of our party’s candidates from the aforementioned states. The said lists are fake and did not emanate from the party headquarters,” the statement partly read.

Enekweizu alleged that the circulation was being driven by individuals he described as “mischief makers” intent on causing confusion and distracting the party from its activities.

He further said the party had already begun investigations to trace those behind the alleged fabrication and how the documents were leaked and spread online.

“Such lists in circulation are being peddled by mischief makers and those who do not wish the party well. However, the party is investigating the sources of such fabrications and leakages as they are desperate attempts to cause ill will and distractions within the party,” he said.

He added that the party remains focused on maintaining internal unity and advancing its goal of offering Nigerians a credible alternative political platform.
