Nathaniel Bassey recounts wife’s five miscarriages

Popular gospel singer and convener of the Hallelujah Challenge, Nathaniel Bassey, has opened up about a heartbreaking chapter in his family life, revealing that his wife, Sarah Bassey, suffered five miscarriages, including an ectopic pregnancy, during different editions of the globally followed worship programme.

Bassey made the emotional revelation during a recent session of the ongoing October 2025 Hallelujah Challenge, which runs from October 7 to 31, with daily worship starting at 11:59 p.m. This year’s edition also marks the eighth anniversary of the spiritual event.

Speaking to thousands of online worshippers, the singer said that despite the pain and grief, he continued to lead worship sessions, choosing to praise God even in moments of deep personal loss.

“My wife will have to forgive me,” Bassey said. “There were times during the Hallelujah Challenge when we had a miscarriage, and nobody knew. I would still come online to praise and dance.”

He recalled a particularly difficult period when his wife was hospitalised due to an ectopic pregnancy, yet he still went ahead to minister before returning to her bedside.

“A few years ago, she was in the hospital with an ectopic pregnancy. I would leave to lead praise and worship online, then return to the hospital. The nurses attending to her would tell me, ‘It was powerful tonight.’ Not one, not two, not three or four pregnancies, but five,” he said.

The gospel minister, who has been married to Sarah since 2013, said his experiences have strengthened his conviction that faith in God should remain unshaken, even in the face of adversity.

“So when people say, ‘Where is God?’ I say, I understand. God is faithful. One of the words He gave us was, ‘Don’t give up on God,’” he told his audience.

Bassey emphasized that the trials only deepened his faith, adding that his story serves as proof that “even in pain, God remains faithful.”

The Hallelujah Challenge, first introduced in 2017, is a month-long virtual praise and prayer session that has since drawn thousands of participants worldwide.
