The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Professor Abdullahi Usman, has stepped down from his role.
His Technical Assistant on Media, Ahmad Mu’azu, confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Tuesday, noting that the exact reasons behind the decision were not yet clear.
“Yes, he has resigned, but I am still waiting for him to communicate his reasons, because he just sent a one-line message to us last night (Monday night), informing us of his resignation. I think proper communication will be done this morning,” Mu’azu stated.
Usman’s exit follows reports that members of the NAHCON board had earlier petitioned President Bola Tinubu, seeking his removal over allegations of misconduct and administrative irregularities.
In a petition dated January 19, 2026, and signed by 11 board members, the commission’s leadership was accused of financial recklessness, poor transparency, and the repeated award of contracts without the approval of the board, in excess of approved budgets.
Titled “Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman,” the petition claimed that the alleged leadership lapses had undermined the commission’s credibility, stability, and operational efficiency.
Usman’s last public assignment before his resignation was last week, when he hosted Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, in Abuja.
President Tinubu had appointed Professor Abdullahi Usman as NAHCON chairman in 2024.
