Matheus Cunha’s sensational late strike secured a thrilling 3-2 comeback for Manchester United at the Emirates, dealing a major blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.
Arsenal, leading 1-0 in the 29th minute thanks to an unfortunate own goal from United defender Lisandro Martínez, looked poised to extend their advantage.
But Manchester United quickly responded, as Bryan Mbeumo pounced on a disastrous backpass from Martin Zubimendi to level the score. Just five minutes after the break, Patrick Dorgu unleashed a thunderous strike to put United ahead.
Arsenal appeared to salvage a point when Mikel Merino poked home from a corner with six minutes remaining. Yet Cunha had the final word, curling a brilliant effort from 20 yards into the net just three minutes later, handing Michael Carrick his second successive win as United’s interim manager.
For Arsenal, the defeat was their first at home in the league this season and casts fresh doubt over their bid to end a 22-year wait for the title.
The hosts started brightly, buoyed by their recent Champions League triumph over Inter Milan. Bukayo Saka’s delicate dink found Martin Ødegaard, whose sliced volley deflected off Martínez to give Arsenal the lead.
However, cracks soon emerged. Zubimendi’s misjudged backpass allowed Mbeumo to control the ball, round David Raya, and slot into an empty net, putting United level.
United’s confidence grew while Arsenal’s composure wavered, culminating in Dorgu’s looping half-volley following a slick one-two with Bruno Fernandes. After a VAR check for a potential handball, the goal stood.
Arsenal responded with a quadruple substitution, bringing on Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze, yet the home side continued to struggle.
A potential penalty appeal for Merino’s shot striking Harry Maguire’s hand was dismissed, and despite Saka forcing a good save from Senne Lammens, Arsenal only managed to equalize via Merino’s header from a corner.
Cunha’s late strike ultimately ended Arsenal’s hopes of a comeback, curling the ball spectacularly past Raya to hand United a memorable victory and leave Arsenal’s title ambitions in serious jeopardy.
