MACBAN denies involvement in Benue community attack

The Benue State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has denied allegations linking its members to the deadly attack in Otukpo Nobi, Otukpo Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed about 16 lives.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, sparked outrage among residents, with many alleging that armed herders were responsible. In protest, youths and women reportedly marched to the Ochidoma’s palace carrying the bodies of some of the victims.

Responding to the allegations on Monday, the association condemned the killings and urged the public not to attribute responsibility before security agencies conclude their investigations.

In a statement signed by the state secretary of MACBAN, Ibrahim Galma, the association said its members had no involvement in the attack and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“It is important for the public to note that all Fulani residents in Otukpo and its environs were forcefully evicted from the area sometime last year,” Galma said.

He added that the evacuation included the Fulani community leader in Otukpo, Chairman Yenusa, who reportedly left the state after attempts to restore peace in the area failed.

Galma also pointed to what he described as existing communal disputes involving Otukpo Nobi and neighbouring communities, including Okete, Amla-Icho and Otada, urging investigators to consider all possible angles.

The association further dismissed suggestions that the killings were carried out in retaliation for the recent death of its chairman, Ardo Risku.

“Making such conclusions at this stage will only compromise the ongoing investigation being carried out by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies,” the statement said.

MACBAN appealed to its members and residents to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continue.

It also urged security agencies to monitor inflammatory comments on social media, warning that such remarks could escalate tensions and undermine efforts to restore peace.

The association expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and prayed for lasting peace in Otukpo and Benue State.
