Pavel Šulc continued his impressive scoring streak, netting twice as Lyon claimed a 3-1 victory over struggling Monaco in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
Since arriving from Czech side Jablonec this season, Šulc has been one of Lyon’s standout signings, reaching 11 goals in 23 appearances.
“Šulc is a unique player,” Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca said. “He may not have the flashiest technique, but he’s incredibly effective, works tirelessly, and always seems to be in the right place at the right time.”
Lyon took the lead in the 35th minute when Corentin Tolisso’s left-sided corner found Nicolas Tagliafico, whose header set up Šulc for a close-range finish.
Monaco responded just before halftime, as Mamadou Coulibaly capitalized on a long ball to level the score.
The Czech midfielder restored Lyon’s advantage in the 57th minute with a curling effort from the edge of the area. Brazilian defender Abner Vinicius sealed the win late on.
Monaco endured further woes when goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky was forced off early after a knee injury following a clash with Šulc, with Philipp Köhn stepping in. Coulibaly was later sent off in the 70th minute for a high tackle on Tagliafico.
The result left Lyon fifth, while Monaco continued their slump with their sixth defeat in seven league matches.
