Ligue 1: Strasbourg edge Monaco in nine-goal thriller

RC Strasbourg signed off their season in spectacular style, overturning a three-goal deficit to defeat Monaco 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller at La Meinau.

Gary O’Neil’s side named a strong starting XI, with only Ben Chilwell absent due to insufficient fitness, while Monaco were hit by a string of injuries.

Paul Pogba and Aleksandr Golovin were among those unavailable, forcing Sébastien Pocognoli to reshuffle into a 3-4-3 system, bringing Wout Faes into defence and shifting captain Denis Zakaria into midfield.

Monaco began on the front foot, with Zakaria sending an early effort over the bar, but Strasbourg also threatened through Julio Enciso, who was denied after a crucial intervention by Faes.

The visitors struck first in the 4th minute when Lamine Camara pounced on a loose backpass to finish coolly.

VAR denied Monaco a potential penalty shortly after, but they continued to press. Strasbourg drew level in the 34th minute when Martial Godo finished clinically on the break after being set up by Enciso.

However, the hosts’ response was ruthless. Camara restored Monaco’s lead just before the break (42’), before Ansu Fati added a third in stoppage time to make it 3-1 at halftime. Christian Mawissa also struck the woodwork in a dominant end to the half for the visitors.

Strasbourg’s second-half response was relentless. Samir El Mourabet nearly reduced the deficit early on, while Folarin Balogun had a goal initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision, awarding him his 14th league goal of the season. Diego Moreira quickly responded for Monaco, rifling in a fourth to make it 4-2.

From there, the momentum shifted dramatically. Sebastian Nanasi sparked the comeback with a goal midway through the half before turning provider for Enciso, who levelled the contest. Nanasi then struck again to bring Strasbourg fully back into it at 4-4.

With six minutes remaining, Godo delivered the decisive blow, scoring his second of the night to complete a stunning turnaround and send Strasbourg 5-4 ahead.

Monaco had no answer in the closing stages as Strasbourg held firm to seal a remarkable comeback victory.
