Lille, under the guidance of Bruno Génésio, missed a crucial opportunity to strengthen their grip on European qualification as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Ligue 1’s struggling Metz on Matchday 21.
The stalemate, played at Stade Saint-Symphorien, left both teams dissatisfied: Lille were unable to extend their advantage in the race for continental competition, while Metz remain anchored to the bottom of the table.
The game offered early drama, with Lille fans erupting as Matías Fernández went down in the penalty area.
However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned the initial spot-kick decision, much to the frustration of the visitors.
Metz had their own chance to make an impact when Alpha Touré netted for the hosts, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a video review, keeping the scoreboard untouched.
With the draw, Lille remain fifth with 33 points, a spot that currently grants a place in the UEFA Europa League.
However, their lead over Rennes has been trimmed to just two points, while Strasbourg, who are set to play Le Havre, sit only three points behind.
Metz, on the other hand, are still bottom with 13 points, just a single point adrift of Nantes, who occupy the final spot above the relegation zone.
Lille will now look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures to protect their European aspirations, while Metz continue their fight for survival, desperate to turn their fortunes around before the season slips further away.
