Lorient made it two Ligue 1 victories in a row after edging past 10-man Lyon 1-0 at the Stade du Moustoir, further strengthening their survival hopes.
Having collected the vast majority of their points at home this season, Les Merlus approached the clash knowing it was a prime chance to climb away from danger against a Lyon side struggling for consistency on the road.
The hosts burst out of the blocks, repeatedly testing visiting goalkeeper Dominik Greif inside the opening minutes.
Jean-Victor Makengo saw a driven strike kept out, before Sambou Soumano somehow failed to convert a teasing cross with the goal wide open. Greif continued to stand firm, tipping a Soumano header to safety.
Lyon eventually offered a response when Martin Satriano forced Yvon Mvogo into a sharp save, but Lorient quickly reasserted their dominance.
Pablo Pagis’ delightful free-kick rattled the woodwork, and Bamo Meite spurned a glaring opportunity from close range.
The match came alive just before the interval. Mvogo produced a sensational one-handed stop to deny Mathys De Carvalho, and moments later Lorient opened the scoring as Pagis smashed in from close range after Soumano’s fortunate assist.
Things quickly got worse for Lyon, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles received two yellow cards within five minutes to leave the visitors a man down.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Lyon controlled much of the possession after halftime but struggled to break down Lorient’s disciplined shape.
Hans Hateboer’s deflected effort over the bar was their most notable chance as time ticked away.
Lorient looked to hit on the counter, and Greif was again called into action to keep out Arsene Kouassi’s strike.
Lyon then mounted late pressure, with Corentin Tolisso’s acrobatic effort and Afonso Moreira both denied by the excellent Mvogo. Kouassi later struck the post, almost sealing the points in style.
But one goal proved enough, extending Lyon’s frustrating run to five away matches without a win and keeping them well off the European places.
Lorient, meanwhile, move six points clear of the relegation play-off position and will hope their impressive home form sparks improvement on their travels.
