Lille made a strong start to their Ligue 1 campaign after securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Angers at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Saturday.
The visitors wasted little time taking control, with Olivier Giroud opening the scoring in the 11th minute.
The experienced striker found space outside the box before calmly sweeping the ball beyond the goalkeeper following a pass from Nabil Bentaleb.
Lille continued to pose a threat and doubled their advantage in the 31st minute through Tiago Santos.
The defender finished from close range after sustained pressure from the visitors put Angers under increasing strain.
Angers enjoyed more possession after the break and finished the match with 56.6 per cent of the ball.
However, their dominance in possession failed to translate into goals, with only two of their 20 attempts testing the Lille goalkeeper.
Lille’s defence remained disciplined throughout, repeatedly dealing with Angers’ crosses and attacking moves.
Alexsandro was particularly impressive, making 10 clearances as the visitors protected their advantage.
Giroud was named Player of the Match after his early goal and intelligent work leading Lille’s attack.
The victory puts Lille third in the early Ligue 1 standings, with Paris Saint-Germain next on their schedule.
Angers, meanwhile, sit 16th and will travel to Auxerre in their next fixture.
