Villarreal defeated Getafe 2-0 in their LaLiga encounter on Sunday, with late goals from Tajon Buchanan and Carlos Romero sealing victory for the hosts at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
After a goalless first half, Villarreal broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when Buchanan connected with a cross from Nicolas Pépé to put his side ahead.
Romero then doubled the advantage in the 90th minute, finishing off a move created by Ayoze Pérez to secure all three points for Villarreal.
The hosts dominated proceedings, enjoying 72 per cent possession and recording 22 attempts on goal, compared to Getafe’s nine. Villarreal also had seven shots on target, while the visitors managed just one.
Despite the defeat, Getafe goalkeeper David Soria delivered an outstanding performance, making five saves to keep his team in the contest for much of the game.
The goalkeeper earned an 8.5 rating, the highest among players from both sides, and prevented an estimated 1.36 expected goals, underlining his contribution despite his team’s loss.
Villarreal also created five big chances and finished with an expected goals figure of 2.30, considerably higher than Getafe’s 0.62.
The victory reflected Villarreal’s attacking dominance, although Soria’s interventions ensured the hosts had to wait until the closing stages to establish a comfortable lead.
