Real Sociedad secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano in their LaLiga encounter at the Reale Arena in San Sebastián on Sunday.
The hosts claimed all three points through a second-half strike from Icelandic forward Orri Óskarsson, who found the back of the net in the 67th minute.
Both sides struggled to break the deadlock in the opening half, with neither team managing to produce the goal needed to take control of the contest.
However, Sociedad eventually made their opportunity count after the restart, as Óskarsson’s effort proved decisive in a closely contested encounter.
Rayo, who entered the fixture in 12th position, were hoping to build on their impressive 3-0 victory over Celta Vigo in their previous league outing but were unable to maintain that momentum against the hosts.
The defeat leaves Rayo Vallecano in 14th position on the LaLiga table, while Real Sociedad remain fifth following the important home victory.
The result also gives Sociedad a positive boost heading into the international break.
