La Liga: Rayo Vallecano sink Oviedo 3–0

Rayo Vallecano claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Real Oviedo, easing into midtable security with a performance that combined opportunism and control.

The match, originally scheduled for February 7 but postponed just hours before kickoff, had left Oviedo feeling wronged and hoping for points by administrative means, but on the pitch, their efforts fell short.

The opening 45 minutes passed with little excitement. Players struggled to gain footing on the slippery Vallecas pitch, and neither side looked likely to break the deadlock.

Oviedo, trapped in a string of misfortunes this season, seemed to be fighting fate itself rather than their opponents.

The breakthrough came just before halftime. Andrei Ratiu unleashed a powerful shot from distance that tested goalkeeper Aaron Escandell.

In the scramble, Jorge de Frutos seized on a defensive miscue from David Carmo, calmly tapping home Rayo’s opener in seconds.

Rayo Vallecano’s attacking prowess quickly became apparent after the interval. Five minutes into the second half, Alvaro Garcia’s clever header found de Frutos, who returned the ball for a penalty after a clumsy challenge from Santiago Colombatto.

De Frutos kept his composure, converting low to the left and doubling the lead.

The left flank remained Rayo’s main source of danger. Around the 60th minute, Pedro Diaz fed Garcia, who drove into the box.

Escandell blocked his initial shot, but Garcia reacted fastest to slot the rebound into the near post, effectively putting the match beyond Oviedo’s reach.

Late in the game, Oviedo showed signs of life, with Thiago Borbas testing Augusto Batalla from a penalty and Alvaro Reina seeing a close-range attempt cleared off the line. But these efforts came too late to alter the outcome.

Rayo may not have dazzled, but their 3-0 win brought rare comfort to Inigo Perez’s side, who now sit 12th with a six-point cushion above the relegation zone.

Oviedo, meanwhile, remain mired in difficulties; nine points from safety make their drop to Segunda increasingly likely unless the string of minor disasters is reversed.
