La Liga: Duarte’s own goal gifts Atletico 1-0 win over Getafe

Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid had to dig deep before finally snatching a late winner to secure a 1-0 victory over Getafe, stretching their impressive run to five straight LaLiga wins.

With an outside chance of forcing themselves into the title race, Atlético began brightly and kept Getafe under constant pressure throughout a goalless first half.

José María Giménez tested the goalkeeper with an early header, while Álex Baena blasted a decent opportunity over the bar soon after.

Getafe, however, were not without threat. Borja Mayoral forced Juan Musso into a routine save with a close-range header, and the visitors carried that momentum into the second half as Mauro Arambarri sent another aerial effort narrowly wide, drawing groans from the home supporters.

Atlético gradually regained control as the minutes ticked away, but just when it seemed they would be left frustrated, fortune swung their way.

In the 82nd minute, Giacomo Raspadori’s low cutback caused chaos in the Getafe box, and defender Domingos Duarte inadvertently sliced the ball into his own net while attempting to clear, silencing the home crowd and sparking wild celebrations in the away end.

True to Simeone’s style, it wasn’t a glamorous performance, but the result keeps Atlético’s strong momentum going, just one defeat in their last 11 matches.

For Getafe, back-to-back scoreless defeats have dealt a significant blow to their European ambitions.
