Real Oviedo goalkeeper Aarón Escandell delivered a standout performance to help his side earn a valuable 1–1 draw away to RCD Espanyol in a tense La Liga encounter.
Espanyol entered the match hoping to strengthen their bid for European qualification, sitting seventh in the standings, while Oviedo arrived bottom of the table and under pressure to secure points in their fight to avoid relegation.
The visitors made a dream start, silencing the home crowd at the RCDE Stadium early on. In the eighth minute, Alberto Reina finished confidently from inside the penalty area after receiving a well-placed pass from T. Fernández, giving Oviedo an unexpected lead.
Espanyol reacted by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, increasing their attacking intensity.
However, their urgency led to a booking in the 12th minute when C. Ngonge was cautioned for a late challenge.
The hosts eventually found their breakthrough before halftime. In the 36th minute, Kike García drew Espanyol level, finishing off a move set up by Ngonge, who redeemed himself after his earlier yellow card.
The goal ensured both sides went into the break with the score tied.
After the interval, Espanyol continued to press for a winner. In the 56th minute, the home side made a triple substitution, introducing T. Fernández, L. Ilić, and N. Fonseca in an attempt to add fresh energy to their attack.
Oviedo responded by tightening their defensive organisation, and the game grew increasingly physical. S. Colombatto received a yellow card in the 61st minute, followed moments later by P. Lozano for Espanyol.
The visitors also made a tactical change in the 62nd minute, bringing on Pere Milla for Ngonge to strengthen the midfield.
Despite sustained pressure from Espanyol, Oviedo’s defence remained resilient, with Escandell producing a series of important saves to keep the hosts at bay.
Late bookings for R. Fernández Jaén in the 75th minute and J. López in the 83rd reflected the rising tension as both sides battled for control.
Espanyol dominated the match statistically but could not convert their chances into a decisive goal.
They recorded an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.82 compared to Oviedo’s 0.87, registered 28 shots with nine on target, and enjoyed 58 percent possession.
Oviedo, meanwhile, managed just six attempts, three on target, but Escandell’s eight saves proved crucial.
The draw represents an important away point for Oviedo in their struggle to avoid relegation. For Espanyol, however, the dropped points at home could prove costly in their pursuit of a European spot next season.
