Athletic Club were held to a 1-1 draw by Elche in their LaLiga clash at San Mamés on Saturday, with Iñaki Williams scoring late to cancel out Facundo Buonanotte’s penalty.
Elche took the lead shortly after half-time when Buonanotte converted from the penalty spot in the 50th minute to put the visitors ahead.
The goal left Athletic with the task of finding a response as Elche looked to protect their advantage in Bilbao.
Athletic increased the pressure as the second half progressed, pushing forward in search of an equaliser while Elche defended their lead.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 79th minute when Williams found the back of the net to restore parity and give the home side renewed hope of completing a comeback.
The equaliser set up a tense final spell, with both teams looking for a late winner.
However, neither side could find the decisive goal before the final whistle.
The result saw Athletic settle for a point at home, while Elche also returned with a share of the spoils after surrendering their second-half lead.
