Kebbi govt reopens school three months after students abduction

The Kebbi State Government has reopened the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, following the abduction of 24 students in November 2025, authorities announced on Tuesday.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Bande, briefed journalists after a security meeting with school principals and heads in Birnin Kebbi, assuring that measures have been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.

“Through counseling and the full deployment of security personnel, confidence has been restored among parents and students, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities,” Dr. Bande said.

Governor Nasir Idris had previously met with the rescued students at the Kebbi State Government House on November 25, 2025, following their rescue.

Dr. Bande further explained that security awareness programs for school staff and principals have been rolled out across the state, including in Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Bunza, Argungu, and now Birnin Kebbi. “Principals, vice-principals, staff, and students all have key roles to play in maintaining school security,” she said.

“We must not allow bandits to disrupt our collective psyche for peaceful living.”

She also emphasized the importance of schools maintaining positive relationships with host communities, describing them as “critical stakeholders in the security architecture of their locations.”

Security officials who attended the meeting echoed the call for vigilance. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) ACP Yakubu Lawal Gumi urged school leaders to “manage your schools with security consciousness. Ensure adequate lighting, as criminals detest exposure, and remain alert to suspicious characters.”

Deputy Commandant of the NSCDC, Wale Henry, warned against porous school structures, calling for proper fencing and intelligent personnel at school gates. “The pillars of security include proper fencing, vigilance, and trained personnel,” he said.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, retired Colonel Danladi Hassan Ribah, noted that the directive to secure schools across Kebbi State has been fully implemented.

He added that a committee report on de-boarding some boarding schools has been submitted and is awaiting the governor’s final decision.

Dr. Bande commended Governor Idris for approving the deployment of security personnel, which she said has strengthened the confidence of teachers and students to continue their academic activities safely.
