Adamawa shuts all boarding schools over rising kidnappings

The Adamawa State Government has ordered the closure of all public and private boarding schools as insecurity and student abductions intensify across the country.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Education and Human Development, Dr. Umar Pella, who said the decision was approved by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to forestall possible attacks on schools in the state.

“Sequel to the security challenges that the country is facing at the moment, particularly with what happened to students in Niger and Kebbi states, it has been observed with great dismay that the target of the evil perpetrators is boarding secondary schools,” Pella stated.

He noted that following the governor’s directive, all boarding facilities—whether in public or private schools—must be shut down immediately.

“I am directed by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Hon. Ahmadu Fintiri, to deboard all boarding schools across the state, be it public or private,” he said.

“They should all operate as day schools for the moment. Therefore, by this letter, all principals and proprietors of public and private schools should deboard their respective boarding schools without further delay.”

The move comes after several states, including Kwara, Plateau, Katsina, Niger, and Taraba, ordered the temporary closure or deboarding of schools in response to escalating attacks and mass abductions.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education clarified that it has not directed a nationwide closure of schools scheduled for November 24, debunking viral claims suggesting otherwise.
