Kano releases ₦5bn for retirees, death benefits

The Kano State Government has disbursed another ₦5 billion as part of outstanding gratuities and death benefits owed to retirees and families of late civil servants.

This marks the fifth round of payments under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.

The governor made the announcement on Wednesday at the Government House, where symbolic cheques were presented to beneficiaries.

He explained that the latest release is in line with his pledge to gradually clear the backlog of entitlements before the conclusion of his first term in 2027.

“Today we are releasing ₦5 billion as the fifth tranche of pension-related payments. Over half of the 12,000 pensioners have now received their full benefits,” Yusuf stated through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.

While expressing gratitude to retirees for their patience, the governor reassured them of his determination to bring an end to their prolonged struggles over pension arrears.

The event also had in attendance traditional leaders, including the Emir of Rano, Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru, who represented the Kano Emirates Council.

He commended the administration’s intervention, noting that many pensioners had endured hardship in the past and were even compelled to pay bribes before receiving their rightful dues.
