The Kano State Government has approved the establishment of a high-powered Mobilisation Taskforce on Voter Registration in a bid to boost residents’ participation in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise.
The move was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued by Musa Tanko Muhammad, Press Secretary to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
According to the statement, the taskforce is to be chaired by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, and will be formally inaugurated by the SSG at a later date.
“This is not just an administrative arrangement but a decisive intervention to deepen participatory democracy in Kano State,” the statement read. “The goal is to ensure that every eligible citizen registers and exercises their right to vote.”
The government said the initiative aligns with directives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and emphasised the importance of mass participation in the registration exercise.
“Voter registration is not a routine exercise but a civic responsibility of extraordinary importance — a gateway to shaping the future of governance,” Muhammad added.
Traditional rulers, civil society organisations, political parties, trade unions, youth groups and women associations were urged to collaborate with the taskforce in order to sensitise the public and achieve widespread mobilisation.
“The voice of the people must be heard at the ballot box, and that begins with registering to vote,” the statement stressed.
