JAMB explains ‘not admitted’, ‘admission in progress’ CAPS statuses

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified the meanings of the admission statuses candidates may see on its Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS.

The Board explained the implications of “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” in an explainer video released on Thursday.

JAMB advised candidates who have not yet received admission to continue checking their CAPS accounts for changes as institutions complete their admission processes.

According to the Board, the “Not Admitted” status does not necessarily mean a candidate has lost the opportunity to gain admission.

“This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted,” JAMB explained.

The Board said candidates should therefore continue monitoring their CAPS for possible updates.

On the “Admission in Progress” status, JAMB explained that it could mean the candidate’s institution had recommended them for admission but the process had not been concluded.

“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” the Board stated.

It added that the status could also occur when the head of an institution had already recommended a candidate, but JAMB was yet to give its final approval.

However, the Board cautioned candidates against treating “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that admission had been secured.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” JAMB warned.

It explained that an institution’s recommendation could still be rejected if the candidate failed to satisfy the required admission conditions.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB said.

The Board noted that a candidate would only be officially considered admitted after JAMB approved the institution’s offer.

“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” it stated.

JAMB said candidates who receive the official offer would then have the option of accepting or rejecting it through the CAPS platform.

The Board further stressed that admission statuses could change throughout the process.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” JAMB said.

It urged candidates to regularly check their CAPS accounts and obtain admission-related information only from its verified channels.
