Inter win Coppa Italia to complete domestic double

Inter Milan completed a domestic double on Wednesday after defeating Lazio 2-0 in the Coppa Italia final, adding the trophy to the Serie A title they secured with three matches remaining.

It marked the first time Inter had won both the league and domestic cup in the same season since José Mourinho guided the Nerazzurri to a historic treble in 2010, which also included the UEFA Champions League crown.

Inter manager Christian Chivu, a member of that famous 2010 squad, continued his impressive rise in coaching after taking charge following last season’s disappointing campaign.

“What mark would I give Chivu? Ten out of 10,” Inter captain Lautaro Martínez said after lifting the trophy.

Chivu replaced Simone Inzaghi at the start of the season after Inter narrowly missed out on the Serie A title to Napoli, exited the Coppa Italia in the semifinals and suffered a crushing 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s UEFA Champions League final.

“Doing the double is very important,” Lautaro said. “It wasn’t easy to restart after what happened last season, but we showed quality, intensity and consistency throughout this campaign.

“I’m happy to finish with another important trophy for this club.”

Lazio contributed to their own downfall as both Inter goals came from costly defensive mistakes at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Inter opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Federico Dimarco delivered a dangerous corner that Lazio defender Adam Marusic accidentally headed into his own net.

The Nerazzurri doubled their advantage after another Lazio error, this time from Nuno Tavares, who lost possession to Denzel Dumfries just outside the penalty area. Dumfries squared the ball for Lautaro, who calmly tapped into an empty net from close range.

Inter had already beaten Lazio 3-0 in Serie A on Saturday in what proved to be a perfect rehearsal for the cup final victory.
