IGP tasks new poice lawyers on integrity

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has charged police officers recently called to the Nigerian Bar to deploy their legal training in strengthening the Nigeria Police Force while upholding professionalism and integrity.

Egbetokun gave the charge at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday while receiving the officers, according to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

Among the new lawyers was Deputy Superintendent of Police Idachaba Laraba, who was specially commended by the IGP for graduating with First Class honours from the Nigerian Law School.

The police chief described their achievement as both a personal milestone and an institutional asset.

“You are not just returning as police officers, but as legal professionals. Your knowledge must be used to strengthen the Force and to better serve Nigerians,” Egbetokun said.

He reminded them that police powers must be exercised strictly within the law, stressing that the newly qualified lawyers should serve as “custodians of legal knowledge” within the organisation.

The officers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to attend law school and assured the IGP of their commitment to professionalism. .“We are honoured by the support of the Force leadership, and we pledge to apply our training to serve with diligence both as officers and legal practitioners,” one of them said on behalf of the group.

The development comes as the Police recently elevated its Legal Section into a full Directorate headed by an Assistant Inspector-General of Police — a move aimed at strengthening legal oversight and reforms within the Force.
