ICYMI: I won’t die anytime soon, I dey kampe – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has dismissed rumours of his death, insisting he is alive, strong and in good health at the age of 89.

Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while addressing guests at a colloquium organised in celebration of his 89th birthday.

The event featured a keynote lecture titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World.”

The former president used the occasion to condemn the circulation of a fake letter on social media which falsely suggested that he had written about his impending death.

He described the document as fabricated and the handiwork of mischief-makers.

Born on March 6, 1937, Obasanjo said he remains convinced that God still has a purpose for his life, stressing that reaching 89 years in sound health is proof that his journey on earth is far from over.

He emphasised that those spreading the rumour were simply wasting their time, noting that his continued strength and vitality show that his Creator still has plans for him.

According to the elder statesman, he will remain alive and active for as long as God desires.

He said, “I dey Kampe.”

Reflecting further on his life, Obasanjo said attaining 89 years in good health strengthens his belief that God does not make mistakes in the affairs of human beings.

He maintained that his preservation and wellbeing demonstrate that his life still carries meaning and responsibility.

“For my final note in this address, I want to point your attention to the work of some never-do-well.

“They publish and circulate a fake paper credited to me that I am writing, giving notice of my death, pafuka.

“That is their wish and surely not God’s wish for me. God has assured me that He has more for me to do on earth, and He has given me the wherewithal to do it.

“And those who wish otherwise are going to be dealt with by God Himself. I dey kampe as usual,” the former President said.

The birthday colloquium drew prominent personalities from different sectors, including political leaders, academics, diplomats and members of the public who gathered to celebrate Obasanjo’s life, leadership and continued influence in national and international affairs.
