WhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations, allowing users to secure unique usernames that will eventually enable them to chat and make calls without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature, which is expected to launch globally later this year, is being introduced in phases.
WhatsApp said the early reservation period is necessary because its platform has more than three billion users worldwide, increasing the chances of multiple people wanting the same username.
Users who have access to the feature can reserve a username by following these steps:
Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
Open Settings.
Tap Account.
Select Username.
Enter a preferred username or use WhatsApp’s built-in username generator if the desired option is unavailable.
Save the selection.
According to the company, users in regions where usernames are not yet active can still reserve a username in advance.
Once reserved, the username cannot be claimed by another user, and WhatsApp will notify account holders when the feature becomes available in their country.
The Meta-owned messaging platform said the new system is designed to strengthen privacy by allowing users to connect with new contacts without revealing their phone numbers.
When usernames become active, people contacted for the first time will see a user’s username instead of their phone number, provided the feature has been enabled.
WhatsApp also revealed that creators, small businesses and organisations will be able to claim the same usernames they use on Facebook and Instagram, subject to availability, to maintain a consistent online identity across Meta’s platforms.
To reduce spam and impersonation risks, WhatsApp will not provide a public directory of usernames. Users will only be able to contact someone if they know the exact username.
The platform is also introducing an optional username key, an additional security layer that can be required before receiving messages from new contacts.
WhatsApp said usernames are optional and distinct from display names. While display names do not have to be unique, each username must be unique and will begin with the “@” symbol.
The company added that reserved usernames will remain private until they become active. Once activated, users will be able to share their usernames instead of their phone numbers when connecting with new people, while their phone numbers remain hidden from anyone who does not already have them saved as a contact.
