The Military Pensions Board has alerted retired personnel and the general public to disregard a fraudulent WhatsApp group falsely operating under its name.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Mohammed, stressed that the platform was created by unknown individuals and had no affiliation with the MPB.
“The WhatsApp group titled Military Pensions Board was not set up by us. It is the handiwork of fraudsters who want to exploit unsuspecting pensioners. For the avoidance of doubt, the Board has not created any WhatsApp groups for pensioners or veterans,” Mohammed said.
He added that official information from the MPB is only disseminated through “its verified social media handles, press releases, official statements, and recognized communication channels.”
The Board noted that scammers have increasingly used digital platforms to impersonate government institutions, often preying on vulnerable groups such as military retirees.
Mohammed assured ex-servicemen that their welfare remains a top priority of the agency.
“We urge all pensioners to seek clarification only through our official contacts whenever in doubt,” he advised.
The Military Pensions Board is responsible for administering and disbursing pensions and gratuities to retired military personnel in Nigeria. Over the years, it has modernised its operations, including the digitisation of payment systems.
However, officials warned that the rise of fraudulent online activity has made vigilance even more critical.
