The Kano State Police Command has issued a public alert following the collapse of the Yaryasa bridge in Tudun Wada Local Government Area after hours of torrential rain.
Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, stressing that the bridge serves as a major route linking Kano with neighbouring states such as Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and other parts of eastern Nigeria.
“This bridge is a critical link for commuters and transporters. Its collapse poses serious risks to road users, which is why the command has taken immediate steps to secure the area,” Haruna said.
According to him, barricades and detour signs have been mounted at strategic points to redirect traffic away from the danger zone. Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Road and Traffic Agency, and the Transport Union are also assisting the Motor Traffic Division in managing the situation.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, urged motorists to prioritise safety. “We appeal to all road users to remain patient, obey traffic officers on the ground, and adhere strictly to the designated alternative routes,” he said.
Bakori further assured residents that the police are working closely with other government agencies to mitigate the impact of the incident and restore safe passage as quickly as possible.
The command has advised drivers heading towards Tudun Wada and beyond to comply with traffic directives to avoid accidents or loss of lives.
