Gowon is alive, aide debunks death rumours

Gowon calls for improved healthcare professionals' training

Reports claiming that former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), is dead have been dismissed as false by his aide.

Adeyeye Ajayi, Gowon’s Personal Assistant, described the circulating claims as “completely untrue and misleading,” warning that such unverified information could cause unnecessary panic and distress.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Ajayi urged Nigerians to ignore the rumours, stressing that the elder statesman is alive and in good health.

“The claims making the rounds on social media about the death of General Yakubu Gowon are completely false. There is no truth whatsoever in the reports,” he said.

“The former Head of State is alive, in good health, and continues to live an active and purposeful life.”

Ajayi added that Gowon remains engaged in national issues and regularly participates in public events, particularly those focused on peace, unity, and national development.

“General Gowon continues to attend public engagements and contribute meaningfully to discussions that promote peace and unity in Nigeria,” he stated.

The aide cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified reports, noting that false information can cause emotional distress to family members, associates, and the wider public.

“We appeal to Nigerians to always verify information from credible sources before sharing, especially on social media,” Ajayi said. “Responsible information sharing is crucial in curbing the spread of fake news.”

The death rumour, which surfaced over the weekend, spread rapidly across social media platforms, leading many users to post condolence messages despite the absence of any official confirmation—once again highlighting the speed at which misinformation can circulate qbonline.
