Fubara bows to pressure, schedules meeting with pro-Wike Rivers lawmakers

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called for a meeting with the 27 members of the State House of Assembly.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday, 10th March 2025.

The Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, conveyed the announcement in a letter to the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, dated 7th March 2025.

According to Danagogo, the letter followed a directive from Governor Fubara, who acknowledged the receipt of the Supreme Court judgment on 5th March.

The upcoming meeting will cover several key issues, including the presentation of the state budget, the payment of outstanding remuneration and allowances for lawmakers, as well as the provision of suitable spaces for the Assembly’s sittings. Other matters that may arise will also be discussed to ensure progress for the state.

“I hereby write in furtherance of His Excellency’s promise stated in my letter dated 5th March 2025 to notify you that His Excellency has received the Supreme Court judgement, and has therefore directed me to invite you and your colleagues—the Honourable members of Rivers State House of Assembly, to a meeting,” Danagogo said in the letter.

The meeting follows a tense situation after the House of Assembly gave the governor a 48-hour ultimatum to present the 2025 budget by 5th March, which was not met. At the House plenary on Friday, Speaker Amaewhule expressed discontent over the governor’s failure to honor the House’s invitations, declaring that the legislature would address the issue appropriately.

Additionally, the legislators had directed the governor to submit the list of commissioner-nominees for screening on Wednesday, a request that also went unanswered. On the same day, some commissioners serving under Fubara, who are not recognized by the Assembly, sought a restraining order in the Rivers State High Court to prevent them from appearing before the House. The hearing on the matter was adjourned until April.
