The Federal Government says it is making plans to establish a dedicated radio station to provide lessons for adult and non-formal education learners across Nigeria.
The Director of Literacy and Development at the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), John Edeh, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Edeh, who is also overseeing the commission, said the initiative had received approval from the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, as part of efforts to expand access to education, particularly for learners in remote and underserved communities.
According to him, radio remains one of the most affordable and accessible means of reaching vulnerable populations, including adults and out-of-school learners who may not have access to conventional education.
He explained that the proposed station would air literacy and vocational education programmes across the country and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Edeh said the commission had already begun implementation plans in collaboration with the National Commission for Nomadic Education.
“The Honourable Minister approved the establishment of the radio station to ensure that learning gets to every part of the country,” he said.
“With radio, we can reach learners in remote communities and ensure lessons are available in every nook and cranny. The platform will also extend beyond Nigeria.”
He noted that digital technology would also be deployed to improve access to learning opportunities for beneficiaries.
The NMEC director further explained that the radio station would serve as a shared platform for agencies responsible for non-formal education, including the National Commission for Nomadic Education and institutions focused on reducing the number of out-of-school children.
“This will be a non-formal education radio station and the various agencies involved in alternative education will be able to utilise it for broadcasting lessons,” he said.
“Once transmission begins, the frequency will be communicated to learners so they can tune in from wherever they are.”
Edeh added that the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader digital education strategy aimed at ensuring no learner is denied access to education because of location or personal circumstances.
