Edo Assembly impeaches suspended speaker eight days after resignation

The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he announced his resignation from the position.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, had resigned as Speaker on August 17, 2026, following his suspension by the lawmakers.

The Assembly subsequently elected Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I, as the new Speaker.

However, during Monday’s plenary, the lawmakers resolved to convert Agbebaku’s suspension to a formal impeachment.

Idaiye said the impeachment notice was endorsed by 17 members of the Assembly and had initially been presented by the Majority Leader during the previous plenary.

According to him, the decision followed the failure to formally present and document Agbebaku’s resignation after his suspension.

The Speaker insisted that Agbebaku was removed from office through impeachment and did not resign.

“The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye said.

The motion for his impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central, Ahmed Waziri.

Following the impeachment, Idaiye directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession.

He warned that security agencies could be called in if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive.

“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House,” Idaiye added.

The development formally brings to a head the dispute surrounding Agbebaku’s suspension, resignation and subsequent removal from the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly.
