The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over an Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, which reportedly targeted senior Hamas officials on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, emphasized the need for respect for national sovereignty and adherence to international law.
“This development raises serious questions about regional stability and the prospects for ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the statement said.
The government acknowledged Qatar’s long-standing role in promoting dialogue and mediation in the Middle East.
“We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid escalation, and recommit to peaceful engagement,” the statement added.
Nigeria also extended sympathies to those affected by the incident and reiterated its support for initiatives aimed at fostering de-escalation, dialogue, and lasting peace.
The ministry further highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to working with the international community, including the United Nations and other multilateral organizations, to advance peace, security, and the rule of law in the region.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensified in October 2023 after a surprise Hamas attack on southern Israel, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and more than 200 hostages.
Israel responded with a prolonged military campaign in Gaza, which has led to widespread destruction and a growing humanitarian crisis.
According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, more than 62,000 people have died since the conflict escalated nearly two years ago.
Qatar has served as a key mediator throughout the conflict, hosting Hamas leaders in its capital, which has functioned as a hub for the group’s political operations.
