FG approves salary, allowance increase for civil servants

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive review of allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, in a move designed to boost earnings, improve working conditions, and enhance productivity in the public sector.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a press briefing following approvals by the Federal Executive Council.

According to her, the reforms cut across multiple salary structures, including the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, ensuring that workers at different levels benefit from the adjustments.

She explained that the revised “peculiar allowances” had been harmonised across grade levels to ensure improved take-home pay for both junior and senior officers.

“The revised peculiar allowances have been structured in a way that impacts all cadres, ensuring that civil servants across board feel the positive effect,” she said.

Walson-Jack also announced an upward review of key allowances such as Duty Tour Allowance, estacode, and book allowance, noting that nearly all allowances contained in the Public Service Rules had been adjusted.

One of the key highlights of the reform is the approval of a 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending approved training programmes, regardless of whether travel is involved.

“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she stated.

The government also introduced a new retirement exit benefit scheme under the Contributory Pension Scheme, which guarantees retiring civil servants 100 percent of their total annual emoluments as a one-time exit package, in addition to their pension, effective from January 1, 2026.

Walson-Jack said the initiative was aimed at ensuring dignity in retirement and providing financial security for public servants after years of service.

“We want no civil servant to leave the service without adequate support. Retirement should come with dignity and financial stability,” she said.

In addition, the Federal Government confirmed the activation of the Employee Compensation Scheme, which provides financial protection for workers who suffer injuries or death in the line of duty.
