Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, on Sunday, August 10, joined top figures in Nigerian sports to celebrate renowned journalist, Dr. Mumini Alao at the public presentation of his autobiography.

The colourful ceremony, held at the Tayo Aderinokun Lecture Theatre, University of Lagos, drew the crème of the sporting world and featured Fashola delivering a compelling lecture titled “Re-Thinking the Current Football Business Model in Nigeria as a Catalyst for Sports Development.”

The event, anchored by SuperSport’s Moses Praiz, was a blend of celebration, reflection, and professional tribute to one of Nigeria’s most influential sports journalists.

Adding further prestige, former Sports Minister and now Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh, together with former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu, wrote the book’s foreword.

The review was presented by Dr. Bolu John Folayan of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.

Tributes to a Sports Media Icon

Chairman of the occasion, Mallam Shehu Dikko, praised Alao’s integrity and professionalism, recalling how their first interaction years ago, when Alao published his response to a Soccer Talk article, helped boost his visibility in the sports industry.

“We met only a few years ago, and he has never once asked me for a personal favour until this event,” Dikko said. “This book will be a lasting reference for young journalists and entrepreneurs.”

In his remarks, Senator Enoh described Alao as “upright, dependable, and highly experienced,” noting that he often tapped into the journalist’s insight during his time as Sports Minister.

Alao’s Appreciation

Visibly moved by the occasion, Alao thanked all attendees, singling out his wife, Medina Alao, for her unwavering support, and paying tribute to his late mentor, Dr. Emmanuel Sunny Ojeagbase, founder of Complete Communications Limited, for giving him his first big break in sports journalism.

A Gathering of Sporting Greats

The distinguished guest list included former NFF President Amaju Pinnick, current NFF President Ibrahim Gusau (represented by George Aluo), former NFF Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi, NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, and football legends Segun Odegbami, Dominic Iorfa, Alloy Agu, Etim Esin, Mutiu Adepoju, Wasiu Ipaye, Joseph Yobo, and Desire Oparanozie.

Journalists from across Nigeria also attended, making the launch a landmark gathering of the nation’s sports elite.
