Ex-Man Utd coach Amorim leads race for Milan job

Former Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim, has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the AC Milan managerial position, according to BBC Sport.

The Portuguese tactician has been without a job since his dismissal by United in January, following a difficult 14-month spell in charge.

Sources close to the former Sporting CP boss had earlier played down speculation linking the 41-year-old with a return to Benfica, where he spent six years as a player, making 154 appearances.

Although no agreement has been reached, discussions have already taken place between AC Milan and Amorim’s representatives, with the Portuguese coach understood to be high on the club’s shortlist to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked in May after failing to secure Champions League qualification.

Milan were once nine points clear of fifth place after beating rivals Inter in March, but a poor end to the campaign saw them win only three of their last 10 matches, collecting 10 points and eventually finishing one point behind Como, who claimed the final Champions League spot on the last day of the season.

USA national team coach, Mauricio Pochettino, is also among the names being considered for the role, alongside Oliver Glasner, who left Crystal Palace after guiding them to a UEFA Conference League final win over Rayo Vallecano.

Meanwhile, another former Manchester United manager previously linked with the Milan job is no longer in contention.

Ralf Rangnick, who led United between 2021 and 2022 before taking charge of Austria, has extended his contract with the national team until 2028.

Should Amorim take the job, he could come up against his former club in pre-season, with AC Milan scheduled to face Manchester United in Wroclaw, Poland on 15 August, just a week before the start of the Premier League season.
