Former England manager, Roy Hodgson, has thrown his weight behind Arsenal’s pursuit of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, encouraging the Premier League side to complete the move.
Gyokeres has attracted strong interest from the North London club following an outstanding season in Portugal, where his prolific goal-scoring form caught the attention of top European teams.
Hodgson, well-regarded for his tactical insight, offered his take on the Swedish striker’s future amid ongoing transfer speculation.
“Viktor Gyokeres is at a big club already, he’s getting the level of football that the Swedish national team would want but If he does come to England, I’m pretty sure that will be welcomed, if you like, by the whole Premier League in terms of the level of play he will bring,” Hodgson told TribalFootball.
He further noted that signing Gyokeres would be a major coup for Arsenal, “If Arsenal do sign him, it will be a real feather in their cap. With regard to the national team, that might give the national team coach a decision to make because I think that both Alexander Isak and Gyokeres are used to playing as a lone centre forward, backed up either from behind or from the wings.”
Reports suggested Arsenal are closing in on a deal worth €63.5 million (£55 million) to bring the Swedish international to the Emirates.
Gyokeres, hailed as one of the top strikers in world football today, could be the marquee signing the Gunners need to bolster their attack ahead of the new season.
