Gyokeres to face fine after snubbing Sporting training for Arsenal move

Viktor Gyokeres is set to face disciplinary action from Sporting Lisbon after failing to report for pre-season training on time, according to club president Frederico Varandas (via nytimes.com).

The Swedish striker will be fined and instructed to issue an apology to his teammates.

Gyokeres’ absence from training didn’t come as a shock, as The Athletic had already reported on Friday that the forward planned to skip pre-season duties amid his desire to join Arsenal.

The Premier League side are in advanced negotiations with Sporting and have already prepared a five-year contract for Gyokeres.

However, the final hurdle remains the transfer fee, which has yet to be agreed upon.

The 26-year-old striker is said to be frustrated with Varandas, whom he believes reneged on an earlier agreement to let him leave for €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons, an offer Arsenal have reportedly already exceeded.

In the meantime, Arsenal have bolstered their squad with the acquisitions of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard.

The North London outfit is also on the verge of completing a deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.
