Ex-DSS director seeks unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu to address insecurity

A former director of the Department of State Services, Mike Ejiofor, has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Ejiofor stated that releasing Kanu could play a pivotal role in addressing the growing insecurity and criminal activities in the Southeast region.

Ejiofor emphasized that the government should take proactive steps toward finding a political solution to the issues in the Southeast, particularly regarding the unknown gunmen and Kanu’s imprisonment. He pointed out that individuals claiming to fight for Kanu have been responsible for acts of violence, yet Kanu himself has publicly condemned these actions.

The former DSS director also highlighted that Kanu has repeatedly expressed opposition to the Monday sit-at-home protests in the Southeast, which have disrupted the region’s economy and livelihoods. Ejiofor questioned the rationale behind actions that claim to be for the people but end up harming their economic well-being.

His remarks come amid increasing calls for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing security challenges in the Southeast and a potential shift toward a political approach to resolving the region’s issues.

He said, “When you come to the Southeast, I think the government should take the initiative to find a political solution to the issue in the Southeast, especially with regard to the unknown gunmen and Nnamdi Kanu.

“will strongly appeal to the government to use this opportunity to unconditionally release Kanu and let us see, because people who are killing innocent people are claiming to be fighting for Kanu, and he has condemned these actions,” Ejiofor said.

He added that over time, Kanu has publicly stated that he is not in support of the Monday sit-at-home in the Southeast.

He queried, “How can you be fighting for people and, at the same time, destroy their economy and their means of livelihood?”
