EPL: Stach fires Leeds to 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest

Leeds United began their Premier League campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday, with Anton Stach scoring a late winner.

The German midfielder settled the contest in the 88th minute, curling a low free-kick from the edge of the penalty area beyond Matz Sels to secure all three points for Daniel Farke’s side.

Forest had been the more threatening team for much of the game but failed to make their opportunities count.

Nikola Milenkovic struck the post with a header, while Igor Jesus squandered two promising chances.

The hosts also thought they had taken the lead when Harry Wilson found the net in the first half, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Forest continued to create openings after the break, with James Trafford making a series of important saves.

The Leeds goalkeeper denied Milenkovic again, tipping his effort onto the crossbar, while Chris Wood also dragged a good opportunity wide.

Leeds grew into the contest late on and eventually punished Forest’s wastefulness when Stach stepped up to deliver the decisive free-kick.

The result gave Leeds their first victory at the City Ground since 1972 and handed Farke’s men a winning start to their Premier League campaign.

The two sides will meet again on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup.
