EPL: Romero rescues point for Tottenham against Newcastle

Tottenham captain, Cristian Romero rescued a dramatic point for his side with a stoppage-time overhead kick as Spurs drew 2-2 with Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Newcastle were the sharper team throughout the first half, controlling possession and carving out the clearer chances.

They eventually took the lead in the 71st minute when Bruno Guimaraes fired home from the edge of the box after Spurs failed to clear their lines.

Romero briefly brought Tottenham level seven minutes later, but Newcastle quickly regained the advantage.

Referee Tom Bramall was sent to the pitchside monitor to review an incident in the box and awarded a penalty, which Anthony Gordon calmly dispatched in the 86th minute.

The drama didn’t end there. Deep into added time, a Spurs corner was punched away by Aaron Ramsdale and fell kindly to Romero, whose stunning overhead kick found the bottom corner to make it 2-2.

Earlier in the match, Harvey Barnes had an early cross headed away, while Lewis Hall dragged an effort wide as Newcastle pressed for an opener.

Nick Woltemade flicked a header over the bar, and Barnes again caused problems down the left, setting up Lewis Miley, whose shot was blocked by the Tottenham defence. Miley later forced a routine save from Guglielmo Vicario.

Newcastle continued to dictate the tempo and came inches from scoring in the 35th minute when Joelinton’s low drive rattled the far post.

Spurs nearly stole the lead when Mohammed Kudus set up Lucas Bergvall, whose inventive backheel looped onto the roof of the net.

Guimaraes’ introduction at half-time immediately lifted the hosts, with Barnes having a shot saved and Woltemade’s follow-up header cleared off the line by Kevin Danso.

Newcastle kept pushing, with Murphy picking out Hall at the back post before Spurs survived a flurry of corners—one ending in a strong Vicario punch from Guimaraes’ delivery.

Tottenham began to see more possession as the half wore on but struggled to break down the Magpies.

Newcastle threatened again when Guimaraes played a superb cross-field pass to Jacob Murphy, whose effort was blocked.

Vicario then parried another Newcastle corner before Brennan Johnson cleared Tino Livramento’s fierce drive.

The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute. Gordon’s cross was only half-cleared and fell perfectly to Guimaraes, who struck a crisp finish into the bottom corner.

A triple Spurs change—Mathys Tel, Richarlison and Xavi Simons—sparked new life, and it paid off quickly as Kudus’ delivery was met by the diving Romero to level the match.

Then came the frantic finale. Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Rodrigo Bentancur tangled with Dan Burn, and Gordon slotted it home to make it 2-1.

But with the final kick of the game, Romero’s spectacular overhead strike ensured Spurs left St James’ Park with a point.
