EPL: Leeds thrash Wolves 3-0, boost survival hopes

Leeds United moved closer to Premier League safety with a convincing 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road, leaving the visitors staring firmly at relegation.

Buoyed by their historic win at Old Trafford earlier in the week, Leeds started brightly and quickly seized control, edging towards the safety benchmark of 40 points.

Their early pressure paid off in the 18th minute when a poorly cleared corner from Ao Tanaka sparked chaos in the Wolves box.

After Noah Okafor was initially denied, the loose ball fell kindly for James Justin, who acrobatically fired home an overhead kick.

Wolves, who have struggled defensively all season, barely had time to regroup before conceding again.

Just two minutes later, Brenden Aaronson carved open their fragile backline with a swift move down the right, delivering a low cross that Okafor calmly converted at the near post. The goal marked his fourth in five games, continuing his fine run of form.

Only after going two goals down did Wolves begin to show some composure, creating a handful of chances.

However, Leeds remained dominant, finishing the first half with a commanding 5-1 advantage in shots on target.

The visitors nearly pulled one back shortly after the hour mark when Ladislav Krejci met a corner, but his header went straight into the hands of Karl Darlow.

Leeds, perhaps with one eye on their upcoming FA Cup semi-final, eased their intensity in the second half.

Wolves thought they had grabbed a late consolation when Adam Armstrong chipped Darlow in the 83rd minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

Leeds continued to threaten sporadically, with Pascal Struijk going close after a powerful run ended in a shot that drifted wide.

Their third goal eventually arrived from the penalty spot after Hugo Bueno brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box, allowing the striker to confidently convert and seal the victory.

Wolves rarely looked capable of mounting a comeback and now face the real prospect of relegation, which could be confirmed if Tottenham Hotspur defeat Brighton & Hove Albion later in the day.

As for Leeds, the win extends their strong momentum ahead of a crucial Wembley clash with Chelsea, while also marking a fifth consecutive league victory over Wolves in this fixture.
