João Pedro rescued a point for Chelsea as the Blues battled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Newcastle United in a pulsating Premier League clash at St James’ Park.
Newcastle looked to be cruising after Nick Woltemade struck twice inside the opening 20 minutes, punishing a sluggish Chelsea start and putting Eddie Howe’s side firmly in control.
However, the momentum shifted after the break as Chelsea’s pace and invention, led by Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro, sparked a strong revival.
The Magpies struck first after just four minutes when Sandro Tonali won the ball in midfield and Bruno Guimarães released Jacob Murphy down the right.
Robert Sánchez blocked Anthony Gordon’s initial effort, but Woltemade reacted quickest to hammer the rebound into the roof of the net.
Chelsea tried to respond through Garnacho, who fired over, while Gordon threatened again with a powerful effort that Sánchez tipped over the bar.
Newcastle continued to dominate midfield through Tonali, Guimarães and Jacob Ramsey, pressing aggressively and pinning Chelsea back.
Their second arrived midway through the half when Lewis Hall’s free-kick found Gordon out wide.
The winger cut inside and delivered a low cross which Woltemade poked past Sánchez, with VAR eventually confirming the goal after an offside check.
Fabian Schär went close with a volley and Woltemade nearly completed his hat-trick before the interval, but Chelsea survived to reach the break only two goals behind.
The visitors found a lifeline early in the second half when Ramsey fouled Cole Palmer on the edge of the area. Reece James stepped up and curled a superb free-kick beyond Aaron Ramsdale, the ball clipping the post on its way in.
That goal transformed the contest. Ramsdale was forced into a sharp save from Neto after a slick move involving Garnacho, as Chelsea began to stretch Newcastle’s defence.
The equaliser came in the 66th minute after Malick Thiaw slipped, allowing Pedro to latch onto Sánchez’s long clearance. The forward raced clear and finished calmly to level the score and halt Chelsea’s run of three straight league defeats on Tyneside.
Chelsea pushed for a winner, with Garnacho firing over, while James made a crucial late tackle to deny Harvey Barnes after Yoane Wissa’s incisive pass.
Both Moisés Caicedo and Garnacho had half-chances in the closing stages, but it was Barnes who came closest to a dramatic finale, volleying narrowly wide five minutes from time.
In the end, honours were even after a breathless encounter that swung dramatically after the interval.
