EPL: Haaland fires Man City to 1-0 win over Brentford

Erling Haaland’s first-half strike proved decisive as Manchester City edged Brentford 1-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Norwegian forward continued his remarkable scoring run, netting a composed finish that lifted City to fifth in the Premier League, just three points behind early leaders Arsenal heading into the October international break.

The breakthrough came early, in the tenth minute. Josko Gvardiol’s clever pass through midfield found Haaland, who used his physical dominance to spin past Sepp van den Berg before calmly slotting the ball beneath Caoimhin Kelleher.

City nearly doubled their advantage when Tijjani Reijnders met a floated cross from Nico O’Reilly and unleashed a powerful volley, only to see Kelleher make a strong save to keep Brentford in the game.

The second half offered Brentford a chance to respond, but City’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma kept the hosts at bay.

A rare defensive lapse by Gvardiol allowed Igor Thiago to break through, but Donnarumma’s sharp intervention denied him.

For the remainder of the match, City largely controlled proceedings, though the final minute brought a scare when Donnarumma’s misplaced pass was intercepted by Kevin Schade, forcing a frantic clearance as the ball deflected wide. Brentford could not capitalize, and City secured all three points.

It was a game of contrasting halves for City, dominant in attack early on, then resolutely defending as the clock ticked down.

The victory also marked 250 Premier League wins in Pep Guardiola’s managerial career, underlining the team’s enduring class.
