EPL: Crystal Palace, Brighton play goalless draw

Crystal Palace and Brighton played out a dull 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park on Sunday, leaving the two sides just a single point apart in the Premier League mid-table.

On the pitch, the contest offered little to separate them. Brighton enjoyed slightly more possession, while Palace registered more shots overall, but struggled to test the visitors’ goalkeeper effectively.

By the final whistle, it was clear neither side deserved more than the single point they walked away with.

The real winners were the fans, who provided a relentless atmosphere despite the lack of action.

Selhurst Park reverberated with chants and cheers throughout, with Palace supporters particularly animated after Georginio Rutter of Brighton received a yellow card for simulation. The booking came after VAR overturned an initial penalty decision in the second half.

Palace were missing defender Marc Guéhi, sidelined with a bruised bone in his foot, leaving manager Oliver Glasner to worry about his availability for England’s upcoming internationals. Brighton, meanwhile, stuck with the same starting XI for the first time all season, as Fabian Hurzeler opted for continuity.

The first half was largely uneventful apart from a few early scares. Maxence Lacroix nearly turned Mats Wieffer’s cross into his own net, while Dean Henderson denied Diego Gómez with a solid stop. Moments later, Bart Verbruggen of Brighton produced a stunning one-handed save to keep out Ismaïla Sarr.

Brighton’s best chance came at the end of the first half when Gómez dispossessed Adam Wharton and fed Yankuba Minteh, but the forward’s ambitious effort went wide.

Palace had their own opening early in the second half when Sarr danced through three defenders before passing to Daichi Kamada, whose close-range effort failed to hit the target.

The game’s most dramatic moment came when Rutter went down in the box, initially earning Brighton a penalty. After a pitchside VAR review, the decision was overturned, with Rutter booked for diving. Kamada later fired into the side-netting as both sides struggled to break the deadlock.

A late substitute, Yeremy Pino, went close in stoppage time with a fierce strike, but Verbruggen made a low save at his near post to preserve the goalless draw.
