EPL: Chelsea edge West Ham 3-2 in dramatic comeback win

Enzo Fernandez’s stoppage-time strike sealed a sensational 3-2 comeback for Chelsea against West Ham in a pulsating London derby at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea found themselves two goals down at the break, courtesy of first-half strikes from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville, leaving the home fans frustrated and jeering.

But under Liam Rosenior, the Blues staged a remarkable turnaround in the second half.

Joao Pedro sparked the revival by heading in Chelsea’s first goal, before Marc Cucurella doubled the comeback with a diving header to level the score.

In a Premier League first, Chelsea recovered from a two-goal half-time deficit to win, thanks to their captain Fernandez, who rifled home in stoppage-time.

West Ham’s Jean-Clair Todibo saw red for violent conduct in the dying moments after tensions boiled over, adding a dramatic coda to the clash.

Rosenior, who had labelled this match Chelsea’s “biggest of the season,” guided his side to their third consecutive Premier League win, becoming only the fourth English manager to do so on his first three top-flight outings, joining Bobby Gould, Sam Allardyce, and Craig Shakespeare.

Overall, the new Blues boss has six wins from seven games across all competitions since taking over from Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea’s remarkable comeback followed a similar midweek heroics against Napoli in the Champions League, where they overturned a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 and secure a place in the last 16.

Saturday’s victory, however, arguably showcased even greater character given the team’s struggles in the opening 45 minutes.

Looking ahead, Rosenior now faces another challenge on Tuesday as Chelsea attempt to overturn a 3-2 deficit in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Premier League leaders Arsenal.

From Struggles to Revival
Rosenior made seven changes from the Napoli match, with Cole Palmer starting after impressing off the bench midweek. Chelsea, however, initially struggled to find rhythm.

West Ham capitalized early, with Bowen delivering a perfect cross that bypassed Chelsea’s defence and keeper Robert Sanchez, allowing Pablo to finish into the far corner in the 7th minute.

Chelsea’s woes deepened when winger Jamie Gittens limped off after a clash with Summerville, who later doubled West Ham’s advantage in the 36th minute.

Summerville’s superb finish, following a flowing move involving Bowen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, left Sanchez with no chance.

Alejandro Garnacho endured a tough afternoon and was substituted at half-time alongside Benoit Badiashile and Jorrel Hato, but the Blues’ revival was about to unfold.

After the restart, Sanchez made key saves to keep Chelsea in the game, first denying Mateus Fernandes and then repelling a snapshot from Bowen. The tide turned when Wesley Fofana’s surging run created space for Joao Pedro, who headed home his fifth goal in as many games.

Chelsea continued their momentum, and Cucurella completed the comeback with a diving header in the 70th minute, connecting with a rebound from Fernandez’s cross via Liam Delap.

With the Blues pressing for the winner, Fernandez struck in stoppage-time after a precise pass from Joao Pedro, marking his 150th Chelsea appearance in memorable fashion.

In the chaos that followed, Todibo’s frustration boiled over, earning him a red card for grabbing Joao Pedro by the throat as West Ham’s collapse completed the dramatic night.
