Darren Fletcher’s first outing as Manchester United’s interim head coach ended without victory as the Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley at Turf Moor.
Jaidon Anthony’s fine second-half strike rescued a point for the hosts and denied Fletcher a winning start, despite United enjoying long spells of dominance after falling behind early.
Burnley began brightly and were rewarded with the opening goal when Bashir Humphreys’ cross took a deflection off Ayden Heaven, looping beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner.
United gradually took control of proceedings and went close on several occasions before the break. Humphreys and Maxime Esteve both made crucial goal-line clearances to deny Mathues Cunha and Patrick Dorgu, while Martin Dubravka produced an outstanding save to keep out Benjamin Sesko.
Lisandro Martinez also thought he had equalised, but his effort was ruled out for a foul on Kyle Walker.
The visitors finally drew level five minutes after the restart as Sesko lashed home from close range after being picked out by the returning Bruno Fernandes.
United then turned the pressure up. Fernandes struck the post, Heaven headed wide from point-blank range, and chances continued to flow.
Their second goal arrived on the hour mark when Sesko struck again, finishing clinically into the far corner after excellent build-up play down the left involving Dorgu.
However, Burnley responded against the run of play. Anthony curled a superb effort beyond Senne Lammens to restore parity, leaving the United goalkeeper helpless.
Teenager Shea Lacey went close to snatching a late winner for United when he rattled the crossbar inside the final 10 minutes, but Scott Parker’s side held firm to secure a hard-earned draw.
Manchester United’s inability to turn dominance into wins continues to haunt them. This result marked a third consecutive league draw for the club,. a sequence they had not endured since December 2018 — and further complicates their push for Champions League qualification.
Fernandes, returning after missing three matches through injury, made an immediate impact with an assist for Sesko and came close to scoring himself. He now leads the Premier League assist charts this season with eight, having only bettered that tally in the 2020-21 (12) and 2024-25 (10) campaigns.
Burnley, meanwhile, showed resilience but extended their winless run to 12 Premier League matches, matching their longest such streak since the 2009-10 season, which ended in relegation for the Clarets.
