Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from a disappointing start to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
United fell behind in the 29th minute when Leif Davis put the visitors ahead, raising concerns of another difficult afternoon following last weekend’s defeat to Hull City.
However, Michael Carrick’s side responded strongly, with Fernandes restoring parity in the 40th minute to send the teams into the break level.
The hosts took control shortly after half-time when Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net in the 56th minute.
Fernandes then put United in front from the penalty spot five minutes later before completing his treble in the 68th minute.
Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth for the Red Devils in the 82nd minute, effectively ending Ipswich’s hopes of a comeback.
Chuba Akpom scored in stoppage time to reduce the deficit, but United held on comfortably to secure their first win of the season.
The victory also provided a much-needed response from United after their disappointing opening-weekend performance, while Marcus Rashford made his first appearance at Old Trafford in 90 weeks.
