EPL: Awoniyi sent off as Brighton thrash Coventry 5-0

Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, was sent off as Brighton & Hove Albion thrashed 10-man Coventry City 5-0 on Sunday to move into fourth place in the Premier League.

Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring for Brighton in the 35th minute, finishing clinically after linking up with Pascal Gross to give the visitors a half-time advantage.

Brighton doubled their lead six minutes after the restart when Malick Yalcouye raced clear of the Coventry defence before firing past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Coventry’s difficult afternoon worsened in the 53rd minute when Awoniyi was shown a red card for catching Maxim De Cuyper in the face with his elbow.

Brighton capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 70th minute, with Gross converting from the penalty spot after Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas inside the box.

Lewis Dunk added a spectacular fourth in the 83rd minute, curling a long-range effort into the top corner before Yasin Ayari completed the rout with a low strike in stoppage time.

The defeat leaves Coventry bottom of the Premier League without a point after four matches, while Brighton have moved into the top four with their second victory of the campaign.
