EPL: Awoniyi brace helps Forest sink woeful Chelsea, boost survival bid

Chelsea sank to another alarming low after a 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, with Super Eagles, Taiwo Awoniyi scoring twice to extend their losing streak to six Premier League matches.

What had already stood as their worst league run in over a century worsened further as Forest, despite naming a heavily rotated side, outclassed the hosts with an efficient and clinical performance.

Awoniyi opened the scoring inside two minutes and later added a second, while Igor Jesus converted from the penalty spot to give the visitors firm control.

The win moved Forest six points clear of the relegation zone under Vitor Pereira.

Chelsea’s attacking issues remained glaring, with their goal drought nearly stretching to six matches before Joao Pedro scored a stoppage-time overhead kick, their first league goal since early March.

Earlier, Cole Palmer missed from the spot after his penalty was saved by Matz Sels.

Forest’s much-changed side displayed greater organisation and sharpness, while Chelsea, led by interim coach Calum McFarlane, struggled to find rhythm.

The situation worsened when teenage debutant Jesse Derry was stretchered off following a heavy collision with Zach Abbott late in the first half.

The visitors made their dominance count early, with Dilane Bakwa delivering the cross for Awoniyi’s opener before winning the penalty that led to Jesus’ goal.

Any hopes of a Chelsea comeback quickly faded after the break, as Awoniyi completed his brace from close range following a delivery by Morgan Gibbs-White.

Defensive lapses continued to cost the hosts, and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was later forced off with a head injury.

Joao Pedro’s late strike offered little consolation, with frustrated fans responding with ironic applause as Chelsea’s poor run showed no signs of ending.
