EPL: Arsenal open title defence with 3-0 win over Coventry

Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in impressive fashion after cruising to a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

Mikel Arteta’s side, who were widely regarded as pre-season favourites to retain the title, dominated from the opening whistle and had the result virtually secured before half-time.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Christos Tzolis won possession and set up Riccardo Calafiori, whose low delivery allowed the German forward to finish confidently.

Arsenal doubled their advantage eight minutes later.

Tzolis was again involved, sending a cross into the area which Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only parry into the path of Bukayo Saka, who calmly converted into an empty net.

Martin Ødegaard completed the scoring four minutes after the restart when his effort took a deflection and looped beyond Rushworth.

The victory marked Arteta’s 150th Premier League win as Arsenal manager in his 249th match, a feat achieved faster than all but four managers in the competition’s history.

Arsenal were also without record signing Bruno Guimarães, who missed the game after picking up a knock in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

Tzolis, however, made an immediate impression after being handed his first league start.

The Greece international played a key role in Arsenal’s opening two goals and earned praise from Arteta for his direct and incisive style.

“It was the perfect start,” Ødegaard said after the match.

Coventry, back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years under Frank Lampard, struggled to create meaningful chances despite spending more than £120 million on new players during the summer.

The visitors did not register an effort on target until the closing stages, when Jack Rudoni’s weak header was comfortably saved by David Raya.

Lampard admitted the defeat represented a learning experience for his team but insisted Arsenal’s result would not define Coventry’s season.

Arsenal will now look to build on the emphatic opening victory as they pursue back-to-back league titles for the first time in more than 90 years.
